Le fort 1 est un ancien fort. Il était situé à Wijnegem et faisait partie de la ceinture de Brialmont. Il a été construit en 1859 et exactement cent ans plus tard, en 1959, il a été dynamité pour redresser la route de Turnhout, qui tournait autour du fort jusqu'alors. Depuis 1993, la moitié sud de la plaine du fort abrite le centre commercial de Wijnegem. La partie nord a été réaffectée en zone forestière.
