Dans les années 30 du 20ème siècle, le gondolier de la science de l'information, Paul Otlet, et l'architecte de renom Le Corbusier soumettent un plan à un concours pour développer la friche de la rive gauche d'Anvers. Ils ont créé une version anversoise de leur Cité Mondiale. Cela aurait beaucoup de grands bâtiments et mettrait en valeur le caractère futuriste et international d'Anvers. Dans le jury du concours, se trouvaient les célébrités de l'époque Henry Van de Velde et Victor Horta. Ils n'en pensaient pas grand-chose et le projet a fini à la poubelle.
