Le château de Hocht et Hochterbampd sont - quelque peu isolés - situés près de la Meuse, qui forme la frontière orientale de la commune de Lanaken et aussi la frontière avec les Pays-Bas. Au début du 19ème siècle, le canal Zuid-Willemsvaart a été creusé en parallèle avec la Meuse. Dans les années 1930, la construction du canal de liaison Briegden-Neerharen a suivi. L'écluse étroite de Neerharen a un aspect spectaculaire en raison de la différence de hauteur de presque 10 m. Les rangées d'arbres le long des chemins de halage accentuent les deux canaux dans le paysage.
