Het kasteel van Hocht en Hochterbampd zijn - enigszins geïsoleerd - gelegen nabij de Maas, die de oostelijke grens van de gemeente Lanaken vormt en tevens de grens met Nederland. Begin 19de eeuw werd hier parallel met de Maas de Zuid-Willemsvaart getrokken. In de jaren 1930 volgde de aanleg van het Verbindingskanaal Briegden-Neerharen. De smalle sluis van Neerharen oogt spectaculair gezien het hoogteverschil van bijna 10 m. Bomenrijen langs de jaagpaden accentueren beide kanalen in het landschap.
