La Docherie est un exemple parfait d'un quartier minier. Dans son livre Grand Central Belge, Pascal Verbeken l'appelle 'la version intensifiée de Charleroi : populaire ; bruyante, têtue, généreuse.' Dans le quartier se trouve le Bois Dochard, où depuis des siècles, le charbon est extrait de façon artisanale dans des puits à ciel ouvert que l'on appelle cayats. Ce quartier a vraiment explosé lorsque les premières grandes mines de charbon ont été construites tout près. Cela a coïncidé avec la construction du canal Charleroi-Bruxelles. En 1853, le quartier comptait 700 habitants. 40 ans plus tard, plus de 6000.
