La Docherie is a textbook example of a mining district. In his book Grand Central Belge, Pascal Verbeken calls it 'the intensified version of Charleroi: popular; loud, stubborn, generous.' In the district overlaps the historic Bois Dochard where for centuries coal has been extracted artisanally from open pits known as cayats. This neighborhood truly burst at the seams when the first large coal mines rose in the area. This was accompanied by the construction of the Charleroi-Brussels canal. In 1853, the district had 700 inhabitants. 40 years later, more than 6000.
