La Docherie is een schoolvoorbeeld van een mijnwijk. In zijn boek Grand Central Belge noemt Pascal verbeken het 'de verhevigde versie van Charleroi: volks; luid, koppig, genereus.' In de wijk overlapt het historische Bois Dochard waar al eeuwen lang op artisanale wijze steenkool uit de gond gehaald werd uit open putten die men cayats noemt. Deze wijk barste pas echt uit zijn voegen toen hier in de buurt de eerste grote steenkoolmijnnen verrezen. Dat ging gepaard met de aanleg van het kanaal Charleroi-Brussel. In 1853 telde de wijk 700 inwoners. 40 jaar later meer dan 6000.
