Dans le dictionnaire du moyen néerlandais, vous pouvez lire que le nom Verloren Kost désigne un objet stratégique : une fortification, généralement une tour ; séparée de la ligne principale qui se trouvait devant elle à une certaine distance. Sa signification est un renfort avancé. Un Verloren Kost est une défense temporaire à partir de laquelle on se retire dans le renforcement proprement dit. C'est littéralement un investissement perdu qui, selon certaines sources, consistait en une tour et parfois se trouvait sur les remparts de la ville.
