In het Middelnederlands woordenboek kan je lezen dat de naam Verloren Kost de aanduiding van een strategisch object is: een verdedigingswerk, gewoonlijk een toren; afgescheiden van de hoofdlinie dat zich vóór deze op een zekere afstand bevond. De betekenis ervan is een vooruitgeschoven versterking. Een Verloren Kost is een tijdelijke verdediging waaruit men zich terug trekt in de eigenlijke versterking. Het is letterlijk een verloren investering die volgens sommige bronnen bestond uit een toren en soms stond deze op de stadwallen.
