Le col du Simplon se situe à 2008 m. (ou 6589 ft.). Il relie les Alpes pennines et les Alpes lépontines en Suisse. Il relie Brig dans le canton du Valais à Domodossola dans le Piémont (Italie).
Le col a acquis une importance internationale pendant l'occupation napoléonienne. Entre 1801 et 1805, une route fut construite sur ordre de l'empereur pour transporter des canons d'artillerie à travers le col entre la vallée du Rhône et l'Italie. Depuis, le col est utilisé par les diligences et a été remplacé au début du vingtième siècle par des autocars postaux.
Le tunnel du Simplon a été construit au début du 20ème siècle à proximité du col, afin de transporter le trafic ferroviaire entre les deux pays.
