Lors de la bataille de Drakenburg le 23 mai 1547, au nord de Nienburg/Weser, l'armée protestante de la Ligue de Smalkald a vaincu les troupes impériales du duc Erich II de Calenberg, qui n'a pu s'échapper que en nageant à travers la Weser. Auparavant, les protestants avaient déjà perdu la guerre de Smalkald par la défaite à la bataille de Mühlberg le 24 avril 1547. En conséquence de la bataille de Drakenburg, le nord de l'Allemagne a été libéré des troupes impériales, renforçant ainsi la position du protestantisme.
