Le gymnase Albert-Schweitzer a pris possession des premières parties du bâtiment à Struckholt en 1954. Le nom a été donné, à l'initiative de la directrice Erna Stahl, le 8 février 1958. Le 3 octobre 1959, Albert Schweitzer a visité l'école et a prononcé un discours.
En 2010, la classe de 7b a remporté le quiz "La meilleure classe d'Allemagne". En 2002, Die Ärzte ont participé pendant une semaine à des enregistrements pour CD et DVD Rock 'n' Roll Realschule à l'ASG. Des élèves de l'ASG ont formé, sous la direction de Jochen Arp, l'orchestre et la chorale de fond.
