La cour du musée de Bad Oeynhausen a été ouverte en 1969 en tant que musée local de la ville thermale de l'Est Westphalie. Les modèles pour le musée étaient le musée plein air de Bad Zwischenahn, le musée de la ferme de Bielefeld et la cour de musée de Rahden qui était alors en cours de création. À l'origine, seul un bâtiment individuel, la maison principale transférée sur le site à partir de 1965, était prévu. L'agrandissement en un ensemble de ferme a été déclenché en 1974 par le don d'une maison d'un métayer. Jusqu'en 1993, cinq bâtiments ont été construits sur le terrain de 2 800 m². De plus, une moulin à eau de ferme a été ajoutée près de l'Osterbach dans la vallée de Siekertal avec deux étangs de moulin.
