El Museo de Bad Oeynhausen se inauguró en 1969 como museo local de la ciudad balneario de Ostwestfalen. Las inspiraciones para el museo fueron el Museo al Aire Libre de Bad Zwischenahn, el Museo de la Casa de los Campesinos de Bielefeld y el entonces recién creado Museo de Rahden. Originalmente, solo se pensaba en un edificio individual, la casa principal que se trasladó allí en 1965. La expansión a un complejo agrícola fue iniciada en 1974 por la donación de una casa de un trabajador agrícola. Hasta 1993, se construyeron cinco edificios en la propiedad de 2.800 m². También se agregó un molino de agua agrícola con dos estanques de molino en el cercano Osterbach del valle de Siekertal.
