Le bâtiment classé monument historique se situe dans le quartier de Rheda, en face de l'église paroissiale catholique Saint-Clément. Depuis 1872, il est la propriété de la maison princière de Bentheim-Tecklenburg.
Entre 1829 et 1830, le conseiller princier Clemens August Rötteken a fait construire le palais qui porte son nom. Rötteken était à l'époque de la Prusse un juriste administratif influent, qui a contribué à faire passer le chemin de fer Cologne-Minden par Rheda. Cela a entraîné l'implantation de grandes entreprises de l'industrie de la viande et du meuble, apportant un essor économique à l'ancienne résidence seigneuriale, toujours marquée par le milieu rural.
