Construit en 1518, l’arsenal se compose de trois bâtiments. Appelé d’abord Zeughaus, ce n’est qu’en 1785 qu’il prend le nom de Saint-Hilaire lors de transformations réalisées par le commandant de l’artillerie de la ville : Marc Gaspard Capriol de Saint-Hilaire. L’arsenal abritait plusieurs milliers d’outils de pionniers, du plomb, du goudron et des munitions. L’impressionnante charpente avec trois niveaux de greniers recouverts de tommettes, atteste de la fonction de stockage du bâtiment.
