Les thermes romains ont des sources d'eau chaude naturelles. L'eau qui jaillit du sol à Bath est tombée sous forme de pluie sur les collines de Mendip à proximité. Elle s'infiltre à travers des aquifères de calcaire jusqu'à une profondeur de 2 700 mètres (8 900 pieds) et 4 300 mètres (14 100 pieds) où l'énergie géothermique élève la température de l'eau entre 64 °C et 96 °C. Sous pression, l'eau chauffée remonte à la surface à travers des fissures et des failles dans le calcaire.
