À Gialova se trouve un monument aux soldats français du général Maison qui ont perdu la vie après la grande bataille de Navarin en 1827 à cause du paludisme. Ils campèrent dans la zone marécageuse de Gialova pour reconstruire la région après les combats (la ville de Pylos et la route de Methoni furent construites par les Français). En septembre et octobre 1828, ils furent frappés par la malaria et 4 760 hommes tombèrent malades et 915 moururent sur un total de 13 760 hommes. Il existe encore un monument à côté de la chapelle en mémoire de ces hommes.
