Une histoire remarquable raconte que, lors d'une attaque de pirates au Moyen Âge, les religieuses du couvent furent contraintes de fuir. L'une d'elles resta sur place et pria la Vierge Marie de la sauver. À ce moment, le rocher sur lequel se dressait le couvent se brisa en deux, précipitant les pirates dans la mer. Selon la tradition locale, cela explique pourquoi l'église est située sur une sorte d'îlot séparé du continent par une étroite bande d'eau.
