Si les pierres de l'église de Waterlandkerkje pouvaient parler... L'histoire de ce charmant petit village abrite une histoire violente à laquelle la statue en bois devant l'église fait référence. Elle a été érigée en mémoire du pasteur Johannes Steuerbaudt, assassiné en 1668. Quelques kilomètres plus au sud, il avait prêché à Stroopuit. Les catholiques y voyaient une provocation, car ils considéraient le hameau comme faisant partie de leur territoire. Fou de rage, ils tirèrent le pasteur de son pupitre et le lynchèrent.
