Hvis stenene i kirken i Waterlandkerkje kunne tale... Historien om denne kære landsby bærer på en voldsom fortælling, som den træstatue foran kirken minder om. Den er rejst til minde om den i 1668 myrdede præst Johannes Steuerbaudt. Et par kilometer længere mod syd havde han prædiket i Stroopuit. Det så katolikkerne som en provokation, fordi de regnede byen som en del af deres område. Rasende trak de præsten ned fra prædikestolen og lynchede ham.
