Alors que le missionnaire Liudger séjournait en Saxe occidentale, le comte Wrachar te Brummen lui offrit en 794 un terrain à l'IJssel entre Baak et Wichmond. Cette donation fait mention pour la première fois de Wichmond sous le nom de Withmundi. La population a commencé vers 800 à ériger une église qui fut bénie en 801 par Liudger le Salvator. Le missionnaire quitta bientôt les lieux pour se consacrer à sa nouvelle abbaye de Werden.
