Autrefois, ceci était la route principale du fleuve Rhin et ici se trouvait donc la frontière septentrionale de l'Empire romain. Au fil des ans, le Rhin a déplacé son cours davantage vers le Lek, le fleuve est devenu plus étroit et moins profond. En 1122, l'évêque d'Utrecht Godebald a décidé que le Rhin devait être endigué à Duurstede. Cela a mis fin à une importante route de liaison entre Wijk bij Duurstede et Utrecht. La Kromme Rijn mesure 26 km de long, en moyenne
2 mètres de profondeur et 10 à 15 mètres de large.
