La lande de Gooise est pleine de trous formés par l'extraction de gravier. Les habitants de la région ont longtemps tiré des revenus de l'extraction de la moraine, jusqu'à bien dans le vingtième siècle et même encore à l'époque de la Réserve Naturelle de Gooise, créée en 1932. Le sable et le gravier ont été des matériaux utilisés pour la construction. En particulier sur la Westerheide, près du St. Janskerkhof, beaucoup de ces fosses à gravier sont encore visibles.
