De Gooise heide zit vol met kuilen die door grindafgravingen zijn ontstaan. De bewoners van het gebied hebben lange tijd,tot ver in de twintigste eeuw en zelfs nog in de tijd van het Goois Natuurreservaat dat in 1932 werd opgericht, inkomsten gehaald uit het afgraven van de stuwwal. Zand en grind waren materialen die voor de bouw zijn gebruikt. Met name op de Westerheide in de buurt van het St. Janskerkhof zijn nog steeds veel van deze grindkuilen zichtbaar.
