Déjà en 1220, des ordinations ont eu lieu dans l'église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine. C'était le lieu de culte de l'abbaye des moniales cisterciennes à Roermond, fondée par le comte Gérard V. À sa mort en 1229, il a été enterré dans la croisée. Il ne reste pas grand-chose de l'édifice original, car il a été complètement réaménagé par l'architecte Cuypers au 19ème siècle. À l'intérieur, vous pouvez également voir le retable de l'autel datant de 1530 et un reliquaire en bois sculpté avec des ailes peintes.
