À la lisière de De Biesbosch se trouve le pittoresque village de Drimmelen. Le village actuel de Drimmelen a célébré en 1995 son 350e anniversaire et est donc encore un village relativement jeune. Il y a aussi un Oud-Drimmelen, qui était appelé Nieuw-Drimmelen avant 1645. Il devait donc y avoir un village Drimmelen encore plus ancien, qui a été touché par l'inondation de Sainte Élisabeth en 1421.
Le tout premier Drimmelen doit être recherché dans l'actuelle Biesbosch, sur la rive de la Meuse médiévale. En raison de la position élevée sur une pente au bord de cette rivière, le nom Drummelen est né, dérivé du mot ‘drumlin’, un terme irlandais-celtique pour une colline allongée. Des moines irlandais ont apporté le christianisme à Geertruidenberg et dans ses environs, et ils sont probablement responsables du nom Drummelen. Très rapidement, en raison d'un changement phonétique, Drimmelen est apparu.
