Alla periferia di De Biesbosch si trova il pittoresco villaggio di Drimmelen. L'attuale villaggio di Drimmelen ha celebrato nel 1995 il suo 350° anniversario ed è quindi ancora un villaggio relativamente giovane. Esiste anche un Oud-Drimmelen, che prima del 1645 era chiamato Nieuw-Drimmelen. Deve quindi esserci stato un villaggio di Drimmelen ancora più antico, che nel 1421 fu colpito dalla piena di Sant'Elisabetta.
Il primissimo Drimmelen deve essere cercato nell'attuale Biesbosch lungo le rive del medioevale Maas. A causa della sua alta posizione su un argine di questo fiume è nato il nome Drummelen, derivato da ‘drumlin’, una parola gaelica irlandese per una collina allungata. Monaci irlandesi portarono il cristianesimo a Geertruidenberg e dintorni e sono probabilmente responsabili del nome Drummelen. Ben presto, a causa di un cambiamento fonetico, nacque Drimmelen.
