La station de Den Helder a été mise en service le 20 décembre 1865 avec l'ouverture de la ligne de chemin de fer Den Helder - Alkmaar. C'était la deuxième ligne de chemin de fer mise en service par la Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij, après la Vieille Ligne. C'était la première partie de la ligne d'État K, construite par l'État des Pays-Bas, de Nieuwediep à Amsterdam.
