Le nom est dérivé du mot flamand zeelandais marollen qui signifie foulque et qui, compte tenu de la touffe blanche sur le plumage noir, rappelle peut-être des religieuses. Marollenput est l'endroit où, après l'inondation de 1583, plusieurs chenaux marins se sont rencontrés. Par le nord venait le Trou Noir, par l'est le Trou de Nieuwerhaven, tandis que le sud-ouest était relié au Zwin via le Trou de Coxys. Ce confluent a conduit à un faible courant, provoquant un ensablement qui a rapidement rendu ces passes maritimes inadaptées à la navigation.
