Le jardin, dont l'origine remonte au 16e siècle, tire son nom de la vigne qui poussait dans le jardin du monastère qui était autrefois ici. La valeur historique du jardin est soulignée par quelques arbres de plus de 100 ans. En 1888, l'architecte paysagiste de Haarlem J.D. Zocher a conçu la disposition actuelle du jardin, ce qui est surtout visible dans la plantation de cette période.
