De tuin, die zijn oorsprong vindt in de 16e eeuw, ontleent zijn naam aan de wingerd die groeide in de kloostertuin die hier ooit was. De historische waarde van de tuin wordt onderstreept door enkele bomen die meer dan 100 jaar oud zijn. In 1888 ontwierp de Haarlemse landschapsarchitect J.D. Zocher de huidige opzet van de tuin, wat vooral zichtbaar is in de beplanting uit die periode.
