La république des Deux Nations , scellée par l'union signée le 1er juillet 1569 à Lublin, est un État qui existe jusqu'en 1795, formé par l'union du royaume de Pologne et du grand-duché de Lituanie. Les deux pays, liés par un monarque commun, élu à vie par une Diète commune, avaient un statut égal. Le grand-duché conservait donc ses propres institutions : trésor, armée, dignités , indépendantes de celles du royaume de Pologne. Elle était une sorte de fédération avant la lettre.
