La rovina del castello di Sigmundsburg si trova – completamente nascosta dalla foresta – su un'isola nel lago di Fernstein. L'area appartiene al comune di Nassereith nel distretto di Imst in Tirolo.
Il castello di Sigmundsburg fu costruito dal Duca Sigmund il Moneta. Era un' “omaggio” alla sua prima moglie, la figlia del re di Scozia Eleonora, che sposò nel 1449. Dopo il completamento del castello, nel 1463, Eleonora si stabilì nel castello, che preferiva alla “corte brulicante di ospiti” di Innsbruck. Si dice che il duca lo utilizzasse per le sue compagnie di caccia in quest'area ricca di selvaggina. Si trovava anche divertimento nella pesca nel lago ricco di trote, per cui c'erano quattro barche. Tuttavia, il castello isolato servì anche occasionalmente come rifugio, nel 1463/65 da una peste dilagante e nel 1478 dai turchi.
