La madre Mosa (o Mosa in francese) ha origine in Francia a Pouilly-en-Bassigny nel Plateau di Langres. Il fiume attraversa le Ardenne francesi e la Lorena in direzione nord e passa per le città di Verdun e Sedan, da dove è navigabile. A Givet, a sud di Dinant, supera il confine con il Belgio. La Mosa curva a Namur (confluenza con la Sambre) verso est e raggiunge attraverso Andenne e Huy la maggiore concentrazione urbana lungo il suo corso: Liegi e dintorni. Oltre a quest'area industriale, la Mosa si piega verso nord per raggiungere il confine olandese oltre Wezet.
