Moder Maas (eller Meuse på fransk) udspringer i Frankrig ved Pouilly-en-Bassigny på Plateauet i Langres. Floden krydser de franske Ardennerne og Lothringen mod nord og passerer byerne Verdun og Sedan, hvor den bliver sejlbar. I Givet, syd for Dinant, passerer den grænsen til Belgien. Maas bøjer ved Namur (sammenløb med Sambra) mod øst og når via Andenne og Huy den største urbane koncentration langs dens løb: Liège og omegn. Forbi dette industriområde bøjer Maas mod nord for at nå den hollandske grænse forbi Wezet.
