Moeder Maas (of Meuse in het Frans) ontspringt in Frankrijk te Pouilly-en-Bassigny op het Plateau van Langres. De rivier doorkruist de Franse Ardennen en Lotharingen in noordelijke richting en passeert de steden Verdun en Sedan, vanaf waar ze bevaarbaar is. In Givet, ten zuiden van Dinant passeert ze de grens met België. De Maas buigt bij Namen (samenvloeiing met de Samber) af naar het oosten en bereikt via Andenne en Hoei (Huy) de grootste stedelijke concentratie aan haar loop: Luik en omgeving. Voorbij dit industriegebied buigt de Maas af naar het noorden om voorbij Wezet de Nederlandse grens te bereiken.
