Il Cimitero del Cratere di Hooge è stato avviato nell'ottobre del 1917, quando Hooghe era caduto in mano alle forze alleate all'inizio della Terza Battaglia di Ypres. Dopo l'armistizio, il cimitero è stato ampliato con circa 5800 tombe provenienti dai campi di battaglia e da cimiteri più piccoli nelle vicinanze. È notevole che la Pietra della Memoria, posta all'ingresso del cimitero, sia situata in una profondità circolare: un simbolo dei numerosi crateri che sono stati creati qui nei dintorni.
