El cementerio de Hooge Crater se inició en octubre de 1917, cuando Hooge cayó en manos aliadas al comienzo de la Tercera Batalla de Ypres. Tras el armisticio, el cementerio se amplió con unas 5800 tumbas de campos de batalla y pequeños cementerios cercanos. Es notable que la Piedra de Recuerdo, situada al frente del cementerio, esté colocada en una profundidad circular: un símbolo de los muchos cráteres que aquí han sido formados.
