I soldati francesi iniziarono la costruzione di questo cimitero nell'autunno del 1914. Solo a partire da giugno 1916, anche i soldati belgi caduti ricevono qui un'ultima dimora. Dopo la guerra, questo cimitero si espanse con le tombe dei soldati belgi. I soldati francesi furono riesumati e trasferiti nel loro luogo di residenza. Così il cimitero militare di Westvleteren divenne uno dei nove cimiteri militari belgi del Fiandre Occidentali. Oggi qui puoi trovare 1207 tombe belghe. Dal 2008 è un monumento protetto.
