Los soldados franceses comenzaron la construcción de este cementerio en otoño de 1914. No fue hasta junio de 1916 que los soldados belgas caídos también recibieron aquí un último lugar de descanso. Después de la guerra, este cementerio se amplió con tumbas de soldados belgas. Los soldados franceses fueron exhumados y trasladados a su lugar de residencia. Así, el cementerio militar de Westvleteren se convirtió en uno de los nueve cementerios militares belgas de West Flandes. Hoy en día, aquí puedes encontrar 1207 tumbas belgas. Desde 2008, es un monumento protegido.
