Franse soldaten startten met de aanleg van deze begraafplaats in de herfst van 1914. Pas vanaf juni 1916 krijgen gesneuvelde Belgische soldaten hier ook een laatste rustplek. Na de oorlog breidde deze begraafplaats uit met graven van Belgische soldaten. De Franse soldaten werden ontgraven en naar hun woonplaats overgebracht. Zo werd de militaire begraafplaats van Westvleteren een van de negen West-Vlaamse Belgische militaire begraafplaatsen. Vandaag vind je hier 1207 Belgische graven terug. Sinds 2008 is dit een beschermd monument.
