L'abbazia fu fondata nel XIII secolo e inizialmente si trovava sulle rive del Durme. Nonostante le distruzioni e le difficoltà durante le guerre di religione(2), l'abbazia continuò a esistere fino all'occupazione francese(8) che brutalmente pose fine alla sua esistenza. Tutti i beni furono sequestrati e distrutti. Ma le sorelle riuscirono a riunirsi.
Dal 1975 si sono stabilite nell'imponente monastero di Oudeheerweg-Heide, un progetto del benedettino Hans Van der Laan. Presso l'abbazia è stato allestito un affascinante museo che racconta il passato turbolento di questa coraggiosa e potente comunità. Il museo è chiuso
