De abdij werd gesticht in de 13de eeuw en lag aanvankelijk aan de oevers van de Durme. Ondanks de verwoestingen en moeilijkheden tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen(2) bleef de abdij bestaan tot de Franse overheersing(8) hier brutaal een einde aan maakte. Alle bezittingen werden aangeslagen en verwoest. Maar de zusters slaagden erin om zich te herenigen.
Vanaf 1975 zijn zij gevestigd in het indrukwekkende klooster aan de Oudeheerweg-Heide, een ontwerp van de Benedictijn Hans Van der Laan. Bij de abdij is er een boeiend museum ingericht dat het turbulente verleden verteld van deze moedige en krachtige gemeenschap. Het museum is gesloten
