Il nome di questo bosco di querce deriva dal nome francese Bois-de-Cuisinères, dove le truppe francesi sistemavano le loro cucine da campo, e non in riferimento all'ufficiale britannico dello stesso nome, come a volte si crede erroneamente.
Nella notte del 22 aprile 1915, i tedeschi lanciarono il primo attacco con gas velenoso della guerra sul fronte occidentale. L'obiettivo del loro attacco era l'avanzata di Ypres, e concentrarono il loro attacco iniziale su due divisioni francesi, la 45ª e la 79ª. Durante l'attacco della sera del 21, le due divisioni francesi erano mal preparate a fronteggiare il cloro e crollarono immediatamente, lasciando un varco largo quattro miglia nella linea del fronte.
