Di fronte all'angolo sud-ovest del Polygon Forest si trova una straordinaria statua bronzea di un Highlander, un soldato scozzese. Si erge quasi nello stesso luogo dove si concluse la prima Battaglia di Ypres il 10 e 11 novembre 1914. A questo 'Black Watch Corner', i britannici e i francesi impedirono ai tedeschi di attraversare verso Ypres. Entrambi i lati si trincerarono sulla cresta. Il monumento non solo rende omaggio permanente alla fermezza del leggendario Black Watch Regiment, ma ricorda anche la determinazione dei 'Old Contemptibles' britannici - il nome derisorio tedesco per l'esercito professionale britannico. Il reggimento perse più di ottomila soldati sul fronte occidentale.
