Prima che bovini e cavalli potessero essere portati nella stalla o al pascolo, la mandria doveva essere portata a un abbeveratoio più volte al giorno. Nei villaggi troppo lontani da un fiume o da uno stagno, gli animali dovevano dissetarsi agli abbeveratoi (alimentati dalla fonte più vicina).
