Santa Maria Val Müstair è una frazione del comune svizzero del Canton Grigioni. Oltre al capoluogo, il comune comprende anche i piccoli villaggi di montagna di Sielva, Pizzet, Pütschai, Craistas e Büglios. Il punto più alto del comune è il Piz Umbrail, alto 3033 metri, che si erge a ovest del passo Umbrail.
La maggioranza del 70% della popolazione parla la lingua romancia, ma il numero è in diminuzione, nel 1970 l'81% parlava ancora questa antica lingua. L'edificio più importante del centro è la chiesa del paese del 1492.
Santa Maria Val Müstair è un importante snodo di trasporto. A est, la strada conduce verso Merano e il Passo Resia. A sud della città si trova il Passo dell'Umbrail, alto 2501 metri, e a ovest di Santa Maria si trova il Passo del Forno, che si collega all'Engadina.
