Santa Maria Val Müstair is a former municipality in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and is located in the Reto-Romance Val Müstair. In addition to the main village, the municipality also includes the small mountain villages of Sielva, Pizzet, Pütschai, Craistas, and Büglios. The highest point in the municipality is the 3033-meter-high Piz Umbrail, which rises west of the Umbrail Pass.
A majority of the population, 70%, speaks the Reto-Romance language; however, this number is declining, with 81% speaking this ancient language in 1970. The most important building in the center is the village church dating from 1492.
Santa Maria Val Müstair is an important traffic hub. To the east, the road goes towards the Italian Merano and the Reschen Pass. To the south of the town lies the 2501-meter-high Umbrail Pass, and to the west of Santa Maria is the Ofen Pass, which provides the connection to the Engadin.
