Il porto si trova a nord di Bonn, lungo il fiume Reno, al chilometro 658 a sinistra, ed è circondato dal quartiere di Graurheindorf. A un chilometro a nord, la Sieg si immette nel Reno, segnando la fine del Medio Reno.
Nel 1907, August Am Zehnhoff fondò un cantiere navale commerciale all'altezza dell'attuale Beethovenhalle. Nel 1924, l'azienda si trasferì a Graurheindorf nella sede attuale. Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, gran parte del porto fu distrutta. In seguito, l'azienda Am Zehnhoff-Söns ricostruì e ampliò il porto. Nel 2004, la società fondò, insieme alle municipalizzate di Bonn, la Bonner Hafenbetriebe GmbH e assunse la gestione operativa.
